Andrew Quick

Professor Andrew Quick is a faculty member at Lancaster University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), affiliated with the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA). He has taught there since 1991, focusing on contemporary performance and practical units. A founder and co-artistic director of the internationally touring performance company imitating the dog, he merges academic research with artistic practice. His work investigates performance ethics, documentation processes, and interdisciplinary collaboration between live and recorded media.

Education: He holds degrees in English and Philosophy from Newcastle University and a PhD in contemporary British experimental performance from Bristol University (1989–1991). His research is deeply connected to contemporary art practices, including performance, installation, and photography, with a focus on space, play, technology, and aesthetics-politics intersections.

Research Trends: Recent publications explore theatricality across film, theatre, and art; digital scenography; and postdramatic narratives. His collaborative performances with imitating the dog (e.g., Arrivals and Departures, The Train) interrogate screen technologies and live performance relationships, often funded by Arts Council England and others. He has organized major symposia on Forced Entertainment and the Wooster Group, advancing discourse on experimental theatre practices.

Advising & Grants: Supervised ten completed PhDs and currently guides eight students. Major grants include £90k ACE funding for The Zero Hour and £95k ACE support for Kellerman. His work with imitating the dog has toured venues like the National Theatre of France and Digital Performing Arts Festival in Taiwan. He also collaborates on international projects, such as Hanuman in Singapore and Rey Lear in Chile.
