Andrew Phillips

Dr. Andrew Phillips is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Environmental GIS at the School of Geography and Environmental Science, University of Southampton since 2016. Previously, he worked at the University of Sheffield and held roles as a GIS Analyst and researcher. His expertise spans GIS applications in environmental science, urban planning, and geospatial data analysis.

Education and Career: Holds a BSc in Environmental Geosciences and a PhD using NASA’s SRTM data for geomorphometric studies. Transitioned to academia via a career break as a GIS Analyst for a regional Transport Executive, followed by research on water quality pollution and urban planning.

Teaching: Specializes in geospatial technologies, including GIS modules for Ocean and Earth Science students. Aims to enhance student learning through practical GIS skills and pastoral support. Current roles include Senior Tutor for the School.

Awards: Recognized for teaching excellence with multiple awards in 2018, including the Mike Clark Teaching Award and SUSU Academic Awards.

Research: Focuses on GIS applications in environmental contexts, such as landform analysis and spatial data resolution impacts. Collaborates across disciplines and supports PhD student development through pedagogic mentorship.
