About
Dr Andrew Newton is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Natural and Built Environment, Queen’s University Belfast. His research focuses on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), glaciology, and environmental change. He leads projects investigating subsurface fluid dynamics, ice sheet histories, and climate change impacts. His work integrates seismic data, geophysical analysis, and environmental modeling to address global energy transition challenges.
Research Interests: CCS efficacy, glacial geomorphology, marine geology, climate change, subsurface fluid flow, methane hydrates, and lake ice phenology. His recent projects include testing CCS viability in the North Sea and reconstructing Pleistocene ice sheet dynamics using 3D seismic data.
Awards: Lewis Penny Medal (2020), Best Poster Award (2018), Estyn Evans Dissertation Award (2011).
Grants & Projects: Principal Investigator for the 2018–2021 project ‘Testing the Efficacy of CCS in the North Sea’. Collaborates on UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and clean energy.
Labs/Teams: Engages with interdisciplinary teams in Queen’s Climate Change Research Group and the Marine Geohazards consortium.
