Andrew Marshall

Professor Andrew Marshall is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), affiliated with the Tropical Forests and People Research Centre and Forest Research Institute. He joined UniSC in 2017 and became an ARC Future Fellow in 2018. His work focuses on conservation science, tropical forest ecology, and restoration, particularly in Tanzania, Australia, Vietnam, and Colombia. He leads the Forest Restoration and Climate Experiment (FoRCE), examining forest recovery dynamics and liana impacts.

Marshall holds a PhD in Ecology from the University of York (UK), alongside M.Res. and B.Sc. degrees. His research emphasizes quantifying human and environmental effects on ecosystems, with contributions to forest health management, biodiversity assessment, and conservation planning. He founded Reforest Africa, a non-profit enhancing forest recovery in East Africa, and has discovered numerous new species.

His research interests include tropical forest restoration, conservation indicators, protected area effectiveness, and the interplay between forest ecosystems and human well-being. Key projects include assessing tropical forest protection for wildlife and people, developing landscape planning tools, and measuring conservation success through adaptive frameworks.

Marshall has received awards such as the 2016 BIAZA Education Award and the 2013 PraxisUnico Impact Award. His work extends to establishing conservation indicators and engaging stakeholders in policy development. Current initiatives include investigating forest restoration in degraded African lands and fostering partnerships for applied conservation solutions.
