Andrew MacDonald is an Honorary Professor at the Manchester Collaborative Centre for Inflammation Research (MCCIR), part of the University of Manchester. He holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (1998) and a BSc from the University of Glasgow (1994). His research focuses on Type 2 inflammation, immune responses to parasitic worms (e.g., Schistosoma mansoni), and cancer immunology, using murine models and human samples. He has supervised 11 PhD and 19 MSc/MRes students, with current advisees including Josh Hughes and Sorayut Chattrakarn. His lab includes postdocs Stefano Colombo and Grace Mallett, as well as a lab manager, Irene Nambuya.
Key research areas include dendritic cell and macrophage function, metabolic regulation in inflammation, and cross-talk between innate and adaptive immunity. He contributed to the MRC grants peer review panel (2018–2022). His work aligns with Sustainable Development Goals related to health and wellbeing.
