Dr Lenton's research centers on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies for achieving net-zero and net-negative emissions, with expertise spanning carbon cycling, marine biogeochemical modeling, ocean acidification, earth system modeling, biogeochemistry, and climate change. He leads Australia's engagement in Mission Innovation - Carbon Dioxide Removal and co-leads the Carbon Dioxide Removal Model Intercomparison Project (CDRMIP).
His significant research funding includes:
- Green Climate Fund (2017-2020)
- NESP Great Barrier Reef Projections (2017)
- Climate Change in Australia (NRM) (2014)
- ACCSP Carbon and Ocean Acidification (2012-2013)
- Pacific Australia Adaptation and Climate Change Program (2010-2013)
- Geoengineering Strategic Project (2014-2015)
- Carbon Cycle Modelling Strategic Project (2015-2016)
- ACCSP Earth System Modelling (2014-2016)
Dr Lenton advises the Australian Government and led the national Sequestration Potential assessment. As CarbonLock Director, he oversees Australia's most extensive carbon removal program developing novel CDR technologies for climate mitigation.
