Dr. Andrew J. Goodwin IV, M.D. serves as Professor and Interim Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. His leadership roles include Vice Chair of Quality and Clinical Affairs, Division Chief for Laboratory Medicine, Medical Director for the Coagulation Laboratory, and Director for Faculty Recruitment and Retention. As an American Board of Pathology certified pathologist in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Dr. Goodwin maintains clinical responsibilities as Section Medical Director of Thrombosis & Hemostasis at the University of Vermont Medical Center and as a CLIA Laboratory Medical Director across multiple institutions in Vermont, northern New York, and New Hampshire.
Dr. Goodwin's research focuses on laboratory thrombosis and hemostasis, with publications spanning quality laboratory testing for thrombotic and hemostatic diseases. His work addresses critical issues in anticoagulant monitoring, D-dimer testing methodologies, von Willebrand factor assays, and point-of-care testing validation. He has also made significant contributions to surgical pathology, particularly in breast and cervical pathology.
Recognized nationally for contributions to laboratory quality and accreditation, Dr. Goodwin serves on the Council for Scientific Affairs for the College of American Pathologists. His leadership extends to educational innovation, having created the Laboratory Management Course Curriculum in 2014 to train pathology residents in operational and regulatory aspects of laboratory medicine.
As Interim Chair, Dr. Goodwin champions strategic initiatives including digital anatomic pathology with AI integration, laboratory stewardship for genomic medicine testing, and creative funding opportunities to support innovative research and education.
