Louisiana State University Health Sciences CenterAbout
Dr. Andrew G. Chapple is an Assistant Professor in the Biostatistics & Data Science department at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Public Health. He holds a joint appointment in Orthopedics and has been on faculty since 2017, with tenure-track status since 2018. Dr. Chapple is an expert in adaptive clinical trial designs, particularly Bayesian methods, and received the 'Best Paper' award from Biometrics in 2019 for his innovative hybrid Phase I-II/III clinical trial design.
Dr. Chapple earned his PhD and MS in Statistics from Rice University in 2018, following an M.Ap.St. in Experimental Statistics and BS in Mathematics from Louisiana State University. He trained under Dr. Peter Thall at MD Anderson Cancer Center, a pioneer in Bayesian adaptive trials.
His research focuses on adaptive clinical trial methodology, Bayesian statistics, and computational approaches to medical research. Dr. Chapple has designed hundreds of studies across multiple medical departments including Orthopedics, OBGYN, Hematology Oncology, and Cancer research. His work spans clinical trials, adaptive decision making, survival analysis, and categorical data analysis. He has developed user-friendly R packages to implement his methodologies, making them accessible to clinical researchers.
Analysis of Dr. Chapple's recent publications (2023-2024) reveals a strong focus on health disparities research, clinical trial methodology, and application of statistical methods across diverse medical specialties including oncology, obstetrics, oral surgery, and neonatology. His work demonstrates consistent application of sophisticated statistical approaches to address real-world clinical challenges.
- Best Paper award from Biometrics for 'A hybrid Phase I-II/III clinical trial design allowing for dose re-optimization in Phase III' (2019)
Dr. Chapple teaches multiple advanced biostatistics courses including Statistical Computing, Categorical Data Analysis, Applied Bayesian Methods, and Statistical Learning. His collaborations span numerous clinical departments at LSUHSC, and he has worked with Harvard and Dana Farber Cancer Center on pediatric brain tumor trials. His expertise in processing large-scale electronic health records data supports research in treatment disparities and longitudinal patient outcomes.
Dr. Chapple serves as a Statistical Reviewer for JAMA Network Open and continues to be highly active in methodological research with numerous publications each year, demonstrating strong productivity and impact in the biostatistics field.
