Andrew Fisher is a Professor in the Department of History at Carleton College, where he has taught since 2003. His research focuses on colonial-era Latin America (16th–18th centuries), particularly social and cultural transformations among indigenous communities in western Mexico. He examines how migrant groups (Hispanic, Black, Indigenous) integrated into peasant societies through Catholic lay brotherhoods.
Fisher's research interests include:
- Colonial western Mexico and the Balsas River region
- Indigenous community dynamics (Cuitlateca, Tepozteca, Nahua, Purépecha)
- Cultural assimilation via religious institutions
- Interdisciplinary studies of migration and identity
