Andrew Dykstra is a Professor of Mathematics at Hamilton College, where he has been a faculty member since 2009. He currently serves as Associate Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Dykstra’s research focuses on dynamical systems, with particular emphasis on symbolic dynamics and ergodic theory. His work explores structural equivalences in dynamical systems and applications to mathematical modeling.
- Education: Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Maryland and a B.A. in Mathematics from Carleton College (magna cum laude, 2001).
Research Interests: Dykstra’s research lies at the intersection of symbolic dynamics and ergodic theory, investigating properties of dynamical systems through combinatorial and topological methods. His recent publications highlight advances in Bratteli diagrams, substitution systems, and Kakutani equivalence, reflecting a focus on theoretical frameworks and computational complexity in dynamical systems.
Scientific Awards: Dykstra has received multiple teaching and research accolades, including the John R. Hatch Excellence in Teaching Award (2012), a VIGRE Dissertation Fellowship (2005), and the Goldhaber Travel Grant (2005). He was also recognized for graduate teaching excellence at the University of Maryland (2006, 2002) and as a Distinguished Teaching Assistant (2007).
Advising and Institutional Contributions: He has served on numerous committees at Hamilton College, including the Committee on Admission and Financial Aid, Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning Advisory Committee, and Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Board. Dykstra has advised over 150 senior theses since 2010, mentored clubs like the Chess Club and Bridge and Pinochle Club, and participated in curriculum development and faculty governance.
