About
Andrew Delaney is a Senior Lecturer in Anatomy and Physiology at Charles Sturt University's School of Dentistry and Medical Sciences, based at the Orange campus. He holds a BSc(Hons) and PhD in Chemistry/Biochemistry and Neuroscience from the University of Newcastle and Australian National University respectively, supplemented by a Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Queensland.
His research focuses on neuronal mechanisms in synaptic transmission and plasticity within amygdala circuits, specifically investigating oxytocin's regulation of emotional processing, noradrenergic control of synaptic transmission, and neuroplasticity in anxiety disorders like PTSD. Current projects include NHMRC-funded research on oxytocin's effect on fear memories, noradrenergic regulation in the central amygdala, pain pathways in hip osteoarthritis (with University of Calgary), and cognitive therapy for autism (with UTAS).
Analysis of his 21 research outputs shows consistent specialization in amygdala neurophysiology, with key themes including:
- NMDA receptor function in fear conditioning (2022)
- Oxytocin modulation of inhibitory transmission (2020)
- Pain processing in osteoarthritis (2022)
- GABAergic and noradrenergic regulation of synaptic plasticity
His scientific recognition includes a 2013 Research Excellence Team Award for Orange Campus Laboratory Facility Development. Dr. Delaney coordinates the Honours program in the Faculty of Science and Health while teaching neuroscience, anatomy, and physiology in clinical sciences subjects for the CSU School of Rural Medicine.
