Andrew D. Morris is a Professor in the History Department at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), serving as Interim Director of the Office of Academic Programs and Planning and the University Accreditation Liaison Officer. He holds a Ph.D. in Modern Chinese History from UC San Diego (1998) and a B.S. in Physics and History from Harvey Mudd College (1991). His research focuses on East Asian history, particularly modern Chinese and Taiwanese history, Cold War dynamics, sports culture, nationalism, and colonialism.
His academic contributions include seminal works like Colonial Project, National Game: A History of Baseball in Taiwan (2010) and Marrow of the Nation: A History of Sport and Physical Culture in Republican China (2004). Morris has received numerous awards, including the Fulbright Research Award (2007) and Distinguished Scholarship Award from Cal Poly (2005-06).
His research explores intersections of sports, politics, and identity in East Asia. Recent publications analyze China’s Olympic consciousness, colonial baseball politics in Taiwan, and Qing-era modernization efforts. Morris actively serves on academic committees, including directing the History M.A. Program and Asian Studies Minor at Cal Poly.
