About
Dr. Andrew Cumpstey is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Consultant in Anaesthesia, Perioperative and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. He holds a PhD from the University of Southampton (2022) investigating oxidative stress in major surgery and critical illness, for which he received the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia's National Research Award. His research focuses on oxygen physiology, perioperative medicine, and extreme environment physiology, collaborating with the European Space Agency and Xtreme Everest teams. He is actively involved in supervising PhD students and accepting applications for doctoral research.
Research interests include improving clinical outcomes in surgery and critical care through translational studies in oxygen therapy, stress signaling, and mitochondrial dysfunction. He has conducted fieldwork in high-altitude regions (e.g., Himalayas, Alps) and Antarctica, exploring physiological adaptations in extreme environments. His work bridges basic science and clinical practice, with recent publications addressing critical care bed management, perioperative oxygenation, and pandemic-related respiratory challenges.
- Education: PhD in Anaesthesia (2022), clinical training in Cambridge, Oxford, Taunton, and Southampton
- Awards: National Research Award (2022)
Collaborations include studies on Antarctic overwintering crews as space travel analogues and high-altitude expeditions to inform critical care strategies. Mountaineering experiences in Greenland and Morocco have supported his research in extreme environment physiology.
