E. Andrew Balas is a Professor in the Department of Health Management, Economics, and Policy at Augusta University's School of Public Health. He holds a PhD in Medical Informatics (University of Utah, 1991) and an MD from Semmelweis University (1977). His research focuses on optimizing biomedical research productivity, improving reproducibility, and applying digital technologies to translate research into practice. He leads the Biomedical Research Innovation Laboratory, which studies best practices for scientific discovery and quality control in laboratories.
Dr. Balas has served in administrative roles including Dean at multiple universities and worked on U.S. Senate health policy initiatives. His service includes roles with the NIH Friends of the National Library of Medicine, the AAUP, and university-wide committees. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, cited over 11,000 times, and authored a seminal textbook on research innovation.
His lab explores reproducibility challenges, Nobel Laureate research strategies, and institutional policies to enhance scientific impact. Collaborations focus on bridging research quality with public health outcomes, including studies on social determinants of cancer survival disparities.
