Andreas Oschlies

Professor Dr. Andreas Oschlies is a leading researcher at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, where he heads the Research Unit Biogeochemical Modelling within Research Area 2: Marine Biogeochemistry.

His research focuses on marine biogeochemical processes and climate interactions, with particular expertise in:

• Modeling carbon cycling and CO2 fluxes in ocean systems
• Phytoplankton dynamics and nutrient limitations
• Climate change impacts on marine ecosystems
• Dissolved organic matter cycling
• Climate engineering assessment

Professor Oschlies has led major collaborative initiatives including SFB 754 on Climate-Biogeochemical Interactions in the Tropical Ocean and SPP 1689 on Climate Engineering. His research spans material grants, priority programs, and collaborative research centers, with particular focus on model-based investigations of ocean biogeochemical processes under changing climate conditions.

He has served in multiple leadership roles including as speaker, sub-project manager, and principal investigator across numerous projects examining the complex interactions between physical oceanography and biogeochemical cycles, with significant contributions to understanding ocean carbon sequestration and climate feedback mechanisms.
