Andreas Hernandez is Lecturer III and W.K. Kellogg Chair/Director of the Sustainability Studies Program at the University of New Mexico. His research examines social movements building sustainable alternatives through agroecology and political transformation.
Research focuses on just transitions to sustainability in Brazil, Senegal, and global contexts, emphasizing agroecological systems, worldview shifts, and participatory democracy. Key research areas include:
- Grassroots sustainability initiatives
- Agroecological policy frameworks
- Ecovillage development
- Political economy of sustainable transitions
He created the award-winning documentary Soil, Struggle and Justice and is developing a film linking Buddhist practices to sustainability. Teaches Sustainability Synthesis (SUST 434) and Capstone (SUST 499) courses.
