About
Professor Andreas Heinz is a prominent psychiatrist and researcher at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, where he works at the University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in the Department of General Psychiatry and Psychotherapy with Polyclinic. His research program spans multiple interdisciplinary projects focusing on the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms underlying addiction and mental health disorders.
His research interests primarily center on the neural mechanisms of addiction, particularly alcohol use disorders, examining dopaminergic and serotonergic systems, decision-making processes, and brain imaging correlates. Professor Heinz employs multimodal neuroimaging techniques including 7-Tesla MRI to investigate GABA-glutamate interactions in depression and schizophrenia, as well as perceptual decision-making under changing assumptions.
Professor Heinz currently leads or participates in numerous significant research initiatives, most notably serving as speaker for the ongoing Transregio Collaborative Research Center TRR 265: 'Loss and Regain of Control over Drug Use: From Trajectories to Mechanisms to Interventions.' He also serves as sub-project manager for several components of this major research program.
- Ongoing projects include 'Targeted global online intervention for pandemic-related mental health problems (COPE)'
- 'Craving as a transdiagnostic marker of impulsive-compulsive behavior'
- 'Mechanisms of specific predictors of alcohol consumption over the lifespan'
His completed research portfolio demonstrates a consistent focus on addiction neuroscience, including projects on 'Dopaminergic mechanisms of stimulus-dependent alcohol craving,' 'Pathogenesis and reversibility of alcohol-toxic brain changes,' and 'Secondary prevention of schizophrenia.'
