Andreas G. Heiss is a Senior Lecturer and Privatdozent at the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). He leads the Bioarchaeology Lab, focusing on environmental archaeology, agricultural history, and food systems. He holds a Dr. in Biology and has been a key figure in numerous international projects, including studies on Ephesos and Alpine Bronze Age mining sites.
His research interests include plant remains analysis, charred wood studies, and cultural foodways. He teaches at BOKU, University of Vienna, and Vienna University of Applied Arts, receiving the 2012 BOKU Teaching Award. He co-founded the Bioarchaeological Society of Austria (BAG) in 2015.
Recent research highlights include investigations into Bronze Age food diversity, copper mining diets, and the oldest evidence of beer in Central Europe. His work integrates microscopic analysis with experimental archaeology to reconstruct past human-environment interactions.
