About
Dr. Andrea Manni is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine and serves as Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Penn State Cancer Institute. With a career spanning over four decades since joining the faculty in 1982, he has established himself as a leading expert in endocrinology and breast cancer research.
Dr. Manni's educational background includes:
- MD from University of Florence (1970)
- Internship in Medicine at St. John Hospital and Medical Center (1972-1973)
- Residency in Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital (1973-1974)
- Residency in Medicine at Case Western Reserve University (1974-1975)
- Fellowship in Endocrinology at Case Western Reserve University (1975-1977)
Dr. Manni's primary research focus has been on breast cancer, with particular emphasis on endocrine determinants of tumor biology, autocrine/paracrine factors mediating hormonal effects, and interactions between hormones and polyamines in tumor control. His work has been groundbreaking in demonstrating the antitumor activity of Tamoxifen in hormone-responsive breast cancer. More recently, his research has centered on breast cancer prevention through dietary interventions with omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which shows promise in reducing breast cancer risk in obese postmenopausal women.
Analysis of Dr. Manni's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the intersection of nutrition, endocrinology, and cancer. His work increasingly explores how dietary components like omega-3 fatty acids can be leveraged for cancer prevention and treatment, with particular attention to molecular mechanisms involving lipoxygenase pathways and microbiome interactions. This represents a shift toward precision onco-nutrition approaches tailored to specific patient populations.
Dr. Manni's scientific recognition includes:
- Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Member (1999)
- Best Doctors in America (2004)
- Department of Medicine Outstanding Research Mentor Award (2016)
- Outstanding Collaborative Research Team (2016)
Throughout his career, Dr. Manni has mentored numerous medical students and fellows in their research projects and serves on both the Graduate Faculty Committee and Medical Student Research Committee. He has secured significant research funding, including multiple grants from the National Cancer Institute and National Center for Research Resources, focusing on polyamines and breast cancer biology, as well as clinical applications of thyroid treatments.
Dr. Manni chairs the Education Committee of Penn State Cancer Institute, where he organizes the annual Cancer Symposium that brings internationally recognized investigators to Penn State. He also founded the annual public forum "Reducing Cancer in the Community," demonstrating his commitment to translating research into community education and outreach.
