Andrea Livesey

Dr Andrea Livesey is a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), specializing in the history of slavery and its legacies in the US and UK. She is also an international representative on the Universities Studying Slavery Consortium's steering committee and founder of the LJMU and Slavery Project.

Research Interests:

Dr Livesey’s research centers on slavery and its aftermath, particularly the intersection of sexual violence and involuntary motherhood under slavery in the Lower US South. She is currently working on two book projects: Voices of the Formerly Enslaved in Louisiana: The WPA Narratives (LSU Press, 2025) and a forthcoming book on enslaved midwives and reproductive justice with UNC Press. Her work is supported by major grants from the British Academy, including the SHAPE Involve and Engage Award.

Her recent publications span book reviews, journal articles, and book chapters, focusing on themes such as enslaved women’s experiences, sexual violence under slavery, and the Federal Writers’ Project. She has also contributed to public discourse through media appearances on BBC Radio, NPR, and national newspapers.

Supervision and Mentorship:

Dr Livesey currently supervises PhD student Carol Worthington at the University of Liverpool and is open to supervising postgraduate students in slavery and race in the Atlantic World. She also mentors students through the LJMU and Slavery Project.
