Andrea Couture is an Assistant Professor and Programme Leader of the BA (Hons) Interior Architecture at Northumbria University's Architecture and Built Environment Department. She joined in 2011 to co-establish the Interior Architecture programme, focusing on curricula development and teaching design, adaptive reuse, and construction technology. A Fellow of the Higher Education Association (2014) and recipient of the 2022 Individual Distinguished Teaching Fellowship, her pedagogy prioritizes student support and professional experience integration.
Her research explores adaptive reuse of historic buildings, spatial topophilia, and phenomenology, alongside interdisciplinary art practices like site-specific installations. She has exhibited work in the UK, Denmark, and China. Prior to academia, she worked as a Senior Designer in architectural practices, leading projects such as the Grade II* Listed Manchester Central Library's creative reuse. She also advised on Northumbria's new architecture studios in the Sutherland Building, collaborating with Page\Park Architects.
Andrea contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in Education and Sustainable Cities. She actively engages with practice through post-occupancy evaluations and has organized events like the 2024 Interior Educators International Conference.
