About
Andrea Calcaterra serves as Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine, Sapienza University of Rome. He has held this position since November 2, 2023, following his appointment as a Fixed-term Researcher (Type B) from November 2020 to November 2023. Throughout his career, he has maintained strong affiliations with Sapienza University of Rome while also contributing to research and teaching at Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome.
Dr. Calcaterra's research focuses on organic chemistry, natural products, and supramolecular chemistry with applications spanning drug discovery, biosensor development, and cultural heritage preservation. His specific interests include the isolation and characterization of natural products from plants, semisynthesis and total synthesis of natural products, synthesis of resorc[4]arene macrocycles and their applications, functionalization of carbon nanotubes with macrocycles for biosensor applications, and cannabinoid chemistry. His work demonstrates a consistent integration of synthetic organic chemistry with analytical techniques and practical applications.
His publication record reveals a strong emphasis on resorcinarene-based systems for molecular recognition and biosensing applications, with significant contributions to cannabinoid research, natural product chemistry, and organic synthesis methodologies. Recent work has particularly focused on developing novel electrochemical biosensors using resorcinarene-modified nanomaterials and investigating natural products with therapeutic potential.
