About
Andre O. Hudson is the Dean of the College of Science at RIT and serves as Program Faculty in the School of Chemistry and Materials Science. He holds a B.S. in Biology from Virginia Union University (2000) and a Ph.D. in Plant Biochemistry from Rutgers University (2006). His research focuses on biochemistry, microbiology, and antibiotic development, with particular emphasis on bacterial peptidoglycan metabolism, amino acid biosynthesis, and genomic characterization of plant-associated bacteria. Dr. Hudson has secured over $1.3 million in grants and authored 43 peer-reviewed articles. He is also a dedicated educator, having rewritten courses during RIT's semester conversion and mentored numerous students in research. His leadership roles include chairing the College of Science Faculty Evaluation and Development Committee and the RIT Isaac L. Jordan Faculty Pluralism Award Selection Committee.
Dr. Hudson’s lab investigates antibiotic resistance, enzymology, and microbial genomics, with recent work on plastic degradation and microbial diversity in extreme environments. He collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, including RIT’s microplastics research team funded by $10 million in grants. His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate levels, emphasizing research-based learning through courses like BIOL-599 Research Based Writing.
Notable research contributions include isolating antibiotic-producing bacteria, analyzing quorum sensing mechanisms, and developing computational tools for enzyme kinetics. He has presented globally, including at the Great Wall Symposium in Paris. His lab’s work integrates biochemistry, genetics, and bioinformatics to address pressing challenges in health and environmental sustainability.
