About
Dr. Ana Vera is Assistant Professor in Portuguese Studies at University College Dublin, School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics. She previously held academic positions at the University of Copenhagen and Clermont Université, where she taught Portuguese and Brazilian Studies and contributed to European cinema curricula. Her work bridges film studies, cultural theory, and socio-political analysis.
Her educational background includes a BA in Philosophy from the University of Évora, an MA in Philosophy (Aesthetics) from University Jean Moulin – Lyon 3, and a PhD in Iberian Studies from University Lumière – Lyon 2, where her research focused on Portuguese cinema and socio-political change.
Dr. Vera's research centers on Portuguese and Iberian cinemas, particularly in relation to crisis, feminism, postcolonialism, migration, and ecological sustainability. She explores how film narratives reflect and respond to historical upheavals, financial crises, and environmental challenges. Her interdisciplinary methodology combines close film analysis with cultural and political theory.
Her recent publications and presentations reveal a strong thematic focus on crisis representation, feminist film history, and the renewal of cinematic canons. She investigates how economic hardship shapes creative output, how female voices are emerging in Portuguese cinema, and how documentary and fictional forms intersect in times of social transformation.
