Ana V. Diez Roux is a Distinguished University Professor of Epidemiology at Drexel University's Dornsife School of Public Health and Director of the Drexel Urban Health Collaborative. She previously served as Dean of the Dornsife School of Public Health from 2014-2023. Her research focuses on social determinants of health, urban health equity, and the impact of environmental factors like climate change. She leads major initiatives including the NIH-funded Drexel Center on Climate Change and Urban Health (CCUH) and the Wellcome Trust-funded SALURBAL Climate Project.
Dr. Diez Roux holds an MD from the University of Buenos Aires, a PhD in Health Policy and Management from Johns Hopkins University, and an MPH from the same institution. She has held academic roles at Columbia University and the University of Michigan, where she chaired the Department of Epidemiology. Her work emphasizes multilevel methods and complex systems approaches to address health disparities.
Key research areas include neighborhood health effects, Latin American urban health systems, and the intersection of climate change with public health. She has led over 500 studies, including seminal work on social epidemiology and environmental health policies. Notable awards include the Wade Hampton Frost Award, Rothman Career Award, and membership in the National Academy of Medicine.
Her current projects include the Drexel FIRST initiative promoting inclusive excellence through mentorship of early-career investigators. She chairs the National Academies' Roundtable on Population Health Improvement and advises agencies like the EPA and CDC on urban health policies.
