About
Ana Rita Brochado is an Assistant Professor (tenure track) at the Interfaculty Institute of Microbiology and Infection Medicine, University of Tübingen, and a member of the Cluster of Excellence 'Controlling Microbes to Fight Infections'. Previously, she was a group leader at the University of Würzburg (2019–2022), supported by the Emmy Noether Programme. She holds a PhD in Biotechnology from the Technical University of Denmark (2012) and an MSc in Biological Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon (2007).
Her research focuses on understanding how bacteria respond to antibiotics, with a particular emphasis on intrinsic antibiotic resistance, drug synergies, and bacterial immunity mechanisms. The Brochado Lab combines microbiology, high-throughput screening, and systems biology to uncover druggable features in bacteria. Current projects include studying Enterobacteriaceae resistance mutations, synergistic drug interactions against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and drug transport regulation in Gram-negative bacteria.
Brochado's work has been recognized with awards such as the Hector Research Career Development Award (2020). Her lab includes postdoctoral researchers and PhD students like Susanne Brenzinger, Martin Amstalden, and Adewale Ogunleye. Key funding sources include the Cluster of Excellence and the Emmy Noether Programme.
