Prof. Ana Maria de Roda Husman is a Professor of Global Changes and Environmentally Transmitted Infectious Diseases at Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Department of Population Health Sciences). She concurrently serves as Head of the Department of Environment at the Centre for Infectious Disease Control (CIb) at the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), holding a full-time appointment there. Her work focuses on preventing infectious diseases transmitted via water, soil, and air, with emphasis on climate change impacts and microplastic-associated microbial risks.
Education: Molecular Biology (BSc, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 1991), PhD in Human Papillomavirus and cervical carcinogenesis (VU Medical Center, 1995). Postdoc at Sanquin (HIV/AIDS research) before joining RIVM in 1998. Became RIVM's Water Virology Project Leader (2002) and CIb's Environmental Department Head (2009).
Research interests include:
- Environmental transmission pathways of pathogens
- Climate change effects on pathogen exposure
- Microplastics as microbial reservoirs
- Water sanitation innovations
Key collaborations involve STOWA, Rioned, municipalities, and water boards. Recent projects include the MIASMAS project (2019-2021), investigating microplastic-associated microbial communities in the Rhine River.
Holds membership in the Technical Soil Committee. Inaugural lecture delivered at Utrecht University on 04 July 2013.
