About
Associate Professor Ana Maria Ramos is a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry (DQ) at NOVA University Lisbon (FCT NOVA) and a long-standing collaborator of the Department of Conservation and Restoration (DCR). She also serves as coordinator of the Horizon 2020 project NEMOSINE and co-leads the CHARM research group within the LAQV-REQUIMTE Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry.
Education
- PhD in Chemical Engineering (Copolymerisation Kinetics), 1993 – NOVA University Lisbon
Research Interests
Ana Maria Ramos has dedicated her career to the science of polymers, spanning both fundamental and applied aspects. Her core research addresses the interplay between polymer structure, processing history, and ageing behaviour, with a special focus on how these factors influence the conservation of cultural heritage. She investigates synthetic, semi-synthetic, and natural polymers used in contemporary art and photography, employing advanced spectral analysis, molecular-weight-distribution studies, thermophysical characterisation, and mechanical testing to establish structure–property–performance relationships.
Within the LAQV-REQUIMTE framework, she advances green-chemistry solutions for heritage conservation, while the CHARM group specifically targets responsive materials that adapt to environmental stresses. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges chemical engineering, materials science, and conservation science.
