Amy Margaris

Amy Margaris serves as Associate Professor of Anthropology at Oberlin College, holding a B.A. from Oberlin (1996), M.A. (2000) and Ph.D. (2006) from the University of Arizona. Her research examines hunter-gatherer adaptations in marine/cold climates, with specialized focus on Alutiiq skeletal technologies and 19th-century ethnological collections. She directs Oberlin's historic Arctic ethnography revitalization project and has published in journals including Museum Anthropology and the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory.

Teaching includes courses on hunter-gatherer societies, colonialism, human evolution, and archaeological methods. Notable contributions include collaborative repatriation of Native Hawaiian ancestral remains and digital curation initiatives for cultural heritage materials. Research integrates materials science analysis with Indigenous knowledge frameworks.
