Amy Hamilton is a Professor in the Department of English at Northern Michigan University. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in English Literature from the University of Arizona, and a B.A. in English and Women's Studies from Pomona College. Her research focuses on Indigenous American literature, environmental literature, gender studies, and early American literature. She currently serves as Editor of the peer-reviewed journal Western American Literature, published by the Western Literature Association.
Dr. Hamilton's teaching includes courses on Native American oral traditions, gender and sexuality in literature, and ecocriticism. Her scholarship integrates Material Ecocriticism, Native American Studies, and Feminist Studies to analyze themes of walking, colonialism, and environmental justice in American texts. She co-edited Before the West was West (2014) and authored Peregrinations: Walking in American Literature (2018).
Recent work explores intersections of climate change and Indigenous literature, gendered violence in Western narratives, and Chicanx authors like Luis Alberto Urrea. Her research bridges literary analysis with contemporary environmental and social justice concerns.
