Amsale Alemu

Amsale Alemu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of African Studies at Howard University. Her research focuses on revolutionary history, higher education, and U.S. geopolitics in the Horn of Africa, with expertise in Ethiopian and Eritrean activism during the Cold War era. She holds a Ph.D. in African and African American Studies and an A.M. in History from Harvard University.

Her academic contributions include publications in Radical History Review, Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and The Global Ethiopian Diaspora. She has been awarded fellowships from the Radcliffe Institute, Hutchins Center, and Fulbright-Hays Program.

Teaching focuses on Pan-Africanism, oral traditions, and education’s role in social change. Her courses emphasize critical theories of African knowledge systems, decolonization of higher education, and intersections of gender and revolution.

Her current book project examines transnational networks of Ethiopian revolutionaries and their anti-imperial critiques, while her articles analyze clandestine literature, diasporic narratives, and anti-colonial methodologies.
