Amina Jamal

Amina Jamal is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her work centers on transnational feminist theory, Islam, gender, and modernity, with a focus on South Asian diasporas and honor-shame discourses.

Research Interests: Jamal explores intersections of gender, race, religion, and sexuality in global contexts, analyzing how categories like religious/secular or Muslim/Hindu are socially constructed and contested. Her SSHRC-funded projects include critical diasporic South Asian feminisms in Canada.

Scientific Contributions: She has received the

and authored foundational works on feminist debates in Pakistan and Canada.

Academic Leadership: Jamal teaches courses in classical and contemporary sociological theory, women and Islam, and immigration studies. She has presented globally on topics including Malala's transnational representation, feminist critiques of secularism, and Canadian diasporic feminisms.
