Amber Murrey is an Associate Professor in Human Geography at the University of Oxford’s School of Geography and the Environment and a Fellow and Tutor at Mansfield College. Her research focuses on decolonial political geographies, resistance to resource extraction in Africa, and epistemic justice. She has held academic positions at institutions including the American University in Cairo and Jimma University in Ethiopia. Murrey’s work integrates decolonial theory with empirical studies of socio-political struggles, particularly around oil extraction in Central and West Africa. She has been awarded grants from the British Academy and the Oxford Teaching Development Program, and her book on Thomas Sankara has been widely recognized in African political discourse.
Her current research includes a book project on the Chad-Cameroon Oil Pipeline’s epistemic violence and collaborations with Cameroonian artists on documentaries exploring humor and environmental justice. Teaching focuses on decolonizing methodologies, critical development geographies, and experiential learning through initiatives like food justice workshops. Murrey advocates for North-South academic partnerships and has organized workshops on decolonizing writing and pedagogy in Ethiopia and Cameroon.
