Amanda Zhang is Lecturer in the School of Historical Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, specializing in 20th-century Chinese history with focus on gender and social history. She holds a DPhil in Oriental Studies from University of Oxford, MSt in Chinese Studies from Oxford, and Bachelor of Laws/Social Sciences from University of Hong Kong.
Her research examines:
- Gender dynamics in Chinese intelligence operations
- Labor history during Maoist industrialization
- Urban social cultures in Republican China
- Female self-representation in historical narratives
Current book projects analyze Chinese female spies and steel workers in Maoist China. Publications reinterpret wartime gender roles through case studies of female operatives and explore cultural representations of women in Shanghai's dance hall culture.
Teaching includes modules on gender in modern China, historical methodologies, and dissertation research training.
