About
Alvaro Hacar Gonzalez is Associate Professor in the Department of Astrophysics at the University of Vienna, where he serves as Deputy Head of Department and Vice-Director of Doctoral Studies. He leads research on star formation processes using radioastronomical observations.
Dr. Hacar's work focuses on:
- Hierarchical fragmentation in molecular clouds
- Velocity-coherent filaments as precursors to star formation
- Gas dynamics in star-forming regions
- ALMA observations of dense cores
His publications establish the velocity-coherent filament model for core formation, demonstrating how molecular clouds fragment into progressively smaller structures. Recent work combines millimeter-wave observations with machine learning techniques for cloud classification.
As Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting Grant EMERGE, Dr. Hacar studies the formation mechanisms of prestellar cores and protostars. He teaches graduate courses on star formation and observational techniques while supervising PhD students in astrophysics.
