About
Alvaro Echeverri Arias is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Translation at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, University of Montreal. He teaches courses including Translation Methodology (TRA1500) and Research Documentation for Language Professionals (TRA1400).
His research focuses on two core domains:
- Translation Pedagogy: Investigating metacognitive dimensions of learning and active learning strategies in translator training, emphasizing learners' active roles in their development.
- History of Translation in Latin America: Analyzing translation's role in pre-independence political texts (e.g., Declaration of the Rights of Man) and constitutions, plus development of translation studies through translated texts since 1970.
Prof. Echeverri Arias has supervised 9 graduate students (2 PhD, 7 MA) between 2011-2021. His FRQSC/SSHRC-funded projects include "La traductologie traduite" (2012-2016) on translation studies corpus development and "Traduction: Territoires, Mémoire, Histoire" (2014-2015) on Latin American translation history. He is an active member of the Groupe de recherche en histoire de la traduction en Amérique latine (HISTAL).
