Allison Gonsalves

Dr. Allison Gonsalves is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Thesis Programs (M.A. and Ph.D.) in McGill University's Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE). She also directs the Science Education Laboratories and co-chairs the European Science Education Research Association’s Science Identities Special Interest Group. Her work focuses on sociocultural aspects of STEM education, particularly addressing systemic barriers faced by underrepresented groups in Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE) disciplines. She holds editorial roles at the Journal of Research in Science Teaching and Gender & Education.

Dr. Gonsalves earned a PhD in Curriculum Studies (Science Education) from McGill University, an M.Sc. in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Guelph, and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Genetics from the University of Western Ontario.

Her research explores science identities through qualitative and narrative methods, analyzing how affective experiences and institutional contexts shape inclusion/exclusion in STE. Current projects investigate students' engagement in equity-focused initiatives and the role of 'science capital' in identity trajectories. She has received the Heather Reisman and Gerald Schwartz Award for Excellence in Teaching (2020).

Dr. Gonsalves is currently not accepting new graduate students. She leads the McGill Science Education Research Group and actively contributes to both formal and informal science education through her editorial, teaching, and research activities.
