Allen Renear

Allen Renear is Professor at the School of Information Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with an affiliate appointment in the Department of Philosophy. He previously served as Dean of the School (2012-2019) and Special Advisor for Strategic Initiatives in the Provost's Office.

His research develops formal ontologies for scientific and cultural objects, applied across information system design, scientific publishing, and data curation in both sciences and humanities. Key focus areas include Digital Humanities, Data Curation, and foundational frameworks for information organization. Renear has published in high-impact venues including Science and Communications of the ACM, influencing standards like ePUB through his chairmanship of the Open eBook Publication Structure Working Group.

Renear leads significant initiatives such as the Data Curation Education Program (DCEP-H OAC) and research on scholarly publishing environments. His professional leadership extends to presidency of the Association for Computers and the Humanities, advisory roles at the Text Encoding Initiative, and a distinguished visiting fellowship at Oxford University Computing Unit.
