Dr. Allen Place is a Professor and Associate Director for Research at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET), part of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. His career spans over three decades at the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute and IMET, focusing on interdisciplinary biological research.
- Education: B.A. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from The Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Place’s research explores the molecular and physiological adaptations of organisms to unique environments and diets, mechanisms of sex determination, and the dynamics of harmful algal blooms (HABs). He advocates for a comparative approach across molecular to organismal levels, emphasizing "Research Without Boundaries". Recent work on the Baltimore Harbor Watchman initiative addresses early detection of HABs to mitigate ecological and human health risks.
His 2015 publications highlight expertise in HABs, marine biochemistry, and ecological interactions. Awards include the UMBI Regent’s Award for Public Service and UMCES President’s Award for Excellence in Application of Science. Current lab members include Emily Jolly, Taylor Armstrong, Miranda Judd, Luke Feeney, and Jens Wira.
