Alix Chapman is an Assistant Professor of African American Studies at Emory University specializing in Black Queer Studies, gender/sexuality in the African Diaspora, and black radical aesthetics in music and performance. His current book project, Raising the Bottom: New Orleans, Sissy Bounce, and the afterlife of Katrina, examines how queer performers became cultural icons following Hurricane Katrina.
Research themes include:
- Black queer cultural production
- Disaster capitalism and cultural resilience
- Performance as political practice
- Liminality in Black queer experience
He previously pioneered Black Queer Studies at Spelman College, developing the first trans-inclusive admissions policy at an HBCU. An activist-scholar, Chapman has participated in global anti-capitalist movements as a musician and performance artist.
