Dr. Alison Tedman is a Senior Lecturer at Buckinghamshire New University, where she has been teaching since 1992. She played a pivotal role in establishing the university’s first BA programme combining film and media studies with video production, and has contributed to the development of several related degrees. She holds a PhD in Film Studies from the University of Kent, with a thesis titled Strategies of Pleasure and Power: The Role of Phantasy in the Fairy Tale Film, as well as a First-Class BA (Hons) in Film and Drama Studies with English Literature.
Her research focuses on fantasy, fairy tale, science fiction, and young adult dystopian media. She has published extensively on YA dystopian cinema and is an active reviewer for Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction and Fantastika Journal. Her recent scholarly work explores visual identity, virtual reality, female agency, and spatial narratives in youth-oriented speculative fiction across film and television. She is a member of the Science Fiction Foundation, the YA Studies Association, and the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies.
The trend in her recent publications shows a consistent engagement with young adult speculative fiction, particularly dystopian and fantasy series and films such as The Hunger Games, The Wilds, The Tribe, and Panic. Her scholarship combines genre analysis, feminist theory, and media studies to examine identity, power, and narrative structure in contemporary screen media.
