Alison Mitchell is a Researcher and Head Teacher in Residence at the University of Glasgow's School of Education, affiliated with the Educational Leadership and Policy (ELP) Research and Teaching Group. She teaches leadership preparation programs for aspiring headteachers and leads the Future of Headship research team. With 33 years in secondary education, including 12 as a headteacher in Glasgow, she holds an MEd (2019) and is pursuing a PhD by publication. She contributes to Glasgow City Council's Leadership Strategy Group and supports educational leadership through mentoring and professional learning.
Her research focuses on ethical leadership, political acuity, and socially just schools. Key interests include mentorship in leadership development, principalship narratives, and anti-racist education. She co-leads programs like Enhanced Political Awareness and Leading Anti-Racism with Glasgow City Council.
Publications highlight leadership sustainability, political literacy, and pandemic-era challenges. Awards include the William Boyd Prize (2019) for academic excellence. She edits the Journal of Leadership, Scholarship, and Praxis in Education and is a Fellow at CenTCS and the Robert Owen Centre.
Alison advises MEd students on topics like technology in language learning, inclusion equity, and student wellbeing. Professional activities include roles in SERA, ISATT, and Scottish Government anti-racism initiatives, emphasizing transformative change in education.
