Alison Bechdel is a Professor in the Practice of English and Film & Media Studies at Yale University. She is renowned for her groundbreaking comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For (1983–2008), which chronicled queer life and politics. Her graphic memoirs, including Fun Home (2006) and Are You My Mother? (2012), blend personal and political themes, exploring family dynamics, identity, and psychoanalytic theory. Her latest work, The Secret to Superhuman Strength (2021), examines fitness and self-transcendence through outdoor pursuits.
Bechdel’s awards include the MacArthur Fellowship ('Genius Grant') and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her work has been adapted into a Tony-winning Broadway musical, Fun Home. She resides in Vermont and continues to contribute to literary and cultural discourse through essays in The New Yorker, Granta, and other publications.
