Alice S. Huang is a Senior Faculty Associate in Biology and Biological Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). She holds a B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University (1961–1966), alongside honorary degrees from Harvard University, Wheaton College, Mount Holyoke College, and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Her academic career includes roles as a Faculty Associate (1997–2007) and Senior Faculty Associate (2007–2025) at Caltech.
Dr. Huang’s research focuses on microbiology, immunology, and virology, particularly the structure and replication of viruses like vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). Her pioneering work identified defective interfering viral particles and RNA-dependent RNA polymerases, advancing virology and disease understanding. She is also recognized for her administrative leadership, including serving as President of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and her role in establishing Singapore’s Biopolis as a global research hub.
Her advocacy for diversity in science, highlighted by her 1974 survey of microbiologists and decades of promoting equity for women and minorities, underscores her commitment to inclusive scientific communities. Dr. Huang continues consulting with institutions globally, contributing expertise in biotechnology and policy.
