Alice Ludvig is a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Forest, Environmental and Natural Resource Policy and Centre for Bioeconomy at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU). With extensive experience in environmental policy, forest governance, and social innovation, she leads multiple European research projects focused on climate resilience, gender equality, and sustainable forest management. Her work bridges academic research with policy development, contributing to European forest policy frameworks and bioeconomy strategies.
Dr. Ludvig earned her PhD in Political Science from the University of Vienna with a thesis on citizenship and naturalization policies in Germany and Austria. She completed her M.A. in Political Science and Ethnology at the University of Vienna, with a thesis on racism in socialist Cuba. Her academic journey includes prestigious fellowships such as the Marie Curie Fellowship at the University of Birmingham and a TMR Fellowship at MZES Mannheim. She also holds an E.MA in Human Rights and Democratization from the University of Padua and University College Dublin.
Dr. Ludvig's research focuses on the intersection of environmental policy, social innovation, and gender equality within forest governance systems. She examines how institutional frameworks can support climate resilience in forest-based value chains, with particular attention to policy trade-offs and decision-making processes. Her work on gender balance in forestry leadership has revealed connections between diversity, crisis resistance, and innovation capacity in the sector. She also investigates non-wood forest products as opportunities for bioeconomy development and social innovation in rural communities.
Dr. Ludvig has received numerous scientific awards including a Visiting Fellowship (2023), Marie Curie-Fellowship (2002), TMR-Fellowship (2001), DAAD-Fellowship (2000), and several grants from the European Commission and Austrian Ministry of Science. These recognitions highlight her contributions to comparative politics, environmental policy, and social innovation research.
As a supervisor, Dr. Ludvig has mentored multiple Master's and doctoral students working on topics including gender barriers in forestry, green care forest policy, social innovations in forestry, and climate policy measures in the forest sector. She has secured substantial research funding from European Commission programs including Horizon 2020 projects such as RESONATE, ForestNavigator, and CROSSEU, as well as national funding sources.
