Alice Conklin is Professor of History at Ohio State University specializing in modern France and its empire. She holds a BA from Bryn Mawr College, MA from NYU, and PhD from Princeton University. Her research examines colonial ideologies, anthropology, and race science in imperial contexts.
Her award-winning book 'A Mission to Civilize' (1997) analyzes France's colonial ideology in West Africa. Current research explores French anthropology through the Musée de l'Homme archives and the history of anti-racism movements.
She has co-authored textbooks including 'France and Its Empire since 1870' (2010) and received fellowships from Guggenheim Foundation, Fulbright Commission, and Mershon Center for International Studies.
Her teaching covers colonial history, social sciences history, and gender in modern Europe. She has chaired committees for the Society for French Historical Studies and American Historical Association.
