Goehr's work explores intersections of literary and religious thought in Ming- and Qing-period China, particularly through the lens of Jin Shengtan's literary criticism and Tang Xianzu's dream plays. She investigates how literary realism and philosophical frameworks emerge from Buddhist and Neo-Confucian traditions.
Her research has been supported by grants from Princeton University Library, the Taiwanese Ministry of Education, and the University of Chicago's Center for East Asian Studies. Goehr collaborates across disciplines and participates in the Center for Premodern Studies and Theorizing Early Modern Studies at UMN, as well as international conferences like the Association for Asian Studies and the American Academy of Religion.
