He holds clinical roles as Staff Pathologist and Director of Head & Neck Pathology. His education includes an MD from Ankara University (1992) and a PhD in Experimental Pathology from Virginia Commonwealth University (2000). Board-certified in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology (2005) and Cytopathology (2007), he completed residencies and fellowships at the University of Colorado and University of Massachusetts medical schools.
Dr. Akalin specializes in head & neck pathology, cytopathology, and pulmonary pathology. His research focuses on improving diagnostic techniques in fine needle aspirations, developing molecular diagnostics for cervical cancers, radiolabeled biomarkers for tumor localization, and identifying prognostic markers in lung neoplasms. His work bridges clinical practice with innovative technologies like deep learning for diagnostic imaging and spectral histopathology to enhance diagnostic accuracy.
Key publications span tumor classification (e.g., lung cancer via infrared spectroscopy), biomarker discovery (Keratin 17 in pancreatic and lung cancers), and diagnostic advancements in cytology. His 1999 Association of Molecular Pathology Trainee Award reflects early recognition of his contributions.
Collaborations include projects with Levitz, Stuart and other co-authors, addressing topics like cryptococcal infections and inflammatory responses. His research networks extend to molecular pathology, oncology, and immunology, with notable impact in biomarker development and diagnostic tool innovation.
