About
Alfred J. López is Professor and Department Head of English at Purdue University, with affiliations in Comparative Literature, American Studies, and the School of Languages and Cultures. He holds the SIS Mellon Foundation Provost's Fellowship for Academic Leadership (2024-2025). His research examines postcolonial theory through the lenses of Global South studies, Cuban/Cuban-American identity, and Latin American cultural narratives.
López's scholarship critically engages with decolonial epistemologies, transnational literary traditions, and the construction of revolutionary iconography—particularly around Cuban nationalist José Martí. His publications consistently bridge historical analysis, philosophical critique, and cultural theory to interrogate power structures across the Americas.
Honors include teaching excellence awards from Purdue's Latino Cultural Center, School of Interdisciplinary Studies, and English Department, alongside research fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation and Big Ten Academic Alliance. As founding editor of The Global South journal, he has shaped critical discourse in postcolonial studies.
