Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alfons Fischer is a Guest Researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung, Düsseldorf, Germany. Previously, he was a full professor for materials science and engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen (retired February 2019). He holds a Dipl.-Ing. from Ruhr Universität Bochum (1980), Dr.-Ing. (1984), and Priv.-Doz. (1992) degrees in materials science.
His research focuses on tribology, fatigue, and corrosion of metallic materials and composites, with applications in mechanical, automotive, biomedical, and offshore engineering. He has held roles in industry (NuTech GmbH, 1992–1996) and currently serves as co-editor-in-chief of the journal WEAR (since 2020). Collaborative affiliations include Rush University Medical Center (visiting researcher since 2005) and the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung.
He has published over 230 peer-reviewed articles and co-authored 5 books, specializing in materials testing, failure analysis, and expert consulting for industrial partners.
